Stump grinding

Stump grinding in San Antonio

A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a mower obstacle and sometimes a home for termites. Grinding is the usual fix.

Grinding vs. removal

Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed wheel to chew the stump down below ground level, usually several inches deep. The roots stay in the ground and decay over time. It's the most common and least disruptive option.

Full stump removal digs or pulls out the stump and major roots. It's more work and leaves a bigger hole, but it may be worth it if you plan to build or pour concrete right where the tree stood.

What to expect

  • Call 811 first. Texas811 marks buried utility lines for free. Your contractor should request a locate before grinding.
  • Grindings. The stump becomes a pile of wood chips and soil. Some people use it as mulch, and some pay to have it hauled away. Ask which is included.
  • Backfill. If you want to plant grass, the hole is usually filled with topsoil once the grindings are cleared.
  • Access. Most grinders fit through a standard gate, but tell the contractor about narrow side yards or steep slopes.

How stump grinding is priced

Price mostly depends on the stump's diameter, the number of stumps, how deep you want it ground, roots above ground, and access. It's often quoted per stump with discounts for several. For rough numbers, see the cost guide.
