Tree work in San Antonio has its own rules of thumb

Live oaks, cedar elms, pecans and mesquites shade a lot of San Antonio yards, and each behaves differently. A few local things are worth knowing before anyone starts cutting:

  • Oak wilt is here. The disease is present in Bexar County and across the Hill Country. Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning or wounding oaks from February through June, when the beetles that spread it are most active, and recommends painting any fresh oak wound right away. More on oak wilt.
  • Drought, then storms. Long dry spells stress trees, and strong spring and summer storms bring down weakened limbs. Dead branches over a roof or driveway are worth dealing with before storm season.
  • Power lines are off-limits. Never trim near electric lines yourself. Contact CPS Energy about branches touching power lines, and call 911 if a line is down.
  • Call 811 before digging. Stump grinding and root work can hit buried lines. Texas811 marks underground utilities for free.

Not sure what a job should cost? Most single-tree jobs land somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars, depending on size, access and what's underneath. See the tree removal cost guide.

Questions homeowners ask

Is this service really free?

Yes. Requesting a quote costs homeowners nothing, and you're never obligated to hire anyone. We may be paid by the local tree companies we refer you to. We send your request to one company that covers your area, not a dozen.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in San Antonio?

It depends. San Antonio's tree preservation rules mostly come into play with construction and development and with certain large trees, and nearby cities and HOAs have their own rules. Before a big removal, ask the tree service whether a permit is needed, or check with the City of San Antonio's Development Services Department.

Who is responsible for a tree on the property line?

In Texas, a tree generally belongs to the owner of the land where the trunk stands. A neighbor can usually trim branches that hang over their side, at their own expense, as long as they don't harm the tree. If there's a dispute, talk with your neighbor first and get legal advice if you need it.

Will homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?

Usually only when a tree falls and damages something your policy covers, like your house or a fence, because of a covered event such as a storm. Removing a tree that hasn't fallen is normally the homeowner's cost. Check your policy or ask your agent.

Are tree services licensed in Texas?

Texas doesn't have a state license for general tree trimming and removal, so ask any company for proof of liability insurance and coverage for its workers before work starts, and get the price and scope in writing. For tree health questions, an ISA Certified Arborist is a good sign.

How fast can someone come out?

It depends on the season and the job. If it's urgent, like a limb on the roof, choose "Storm or emergency tree work" and say so in the details so it's flagged.
